Celebrate the Māori New Year with this literacy and craft resource. Read the article in the NZ School Journal, complete the follow-up comprehension activity and then make a paper lantern. The School Journal article is not provided in this resource. You will need access to: New Zealand School Journal – Part 1 – Number 3 – 2005 The article is about 2 children who find old kamokamo shells under their Gran’s hedge. They plant the seeds and wait for the new kamokamo to grown. They make lanterns out of the dried shells during Matariki. Reading Comprehension Activity: After reading the article in the school journal, students make a kamokamo flip book to show the order that events happened in the article. There are a total of 14 events plus a title page and a back page to colour. The kamokamo are on two A4 pages. There are 2 sets of activity sheets – one set has clues in the stalk of the picture to indicate ‘beginning, middle or end’ (B, M, E). This set is suitable for your students that require some extra support to complete the task. Answers are provided. A super-fun game that your students will love! Particularly suitable for New Zealand and Australian classrooms that are looking for learning activities based around Anzac Day. You’re in a trench above Anzac Cove. You receive a coded message from your Commander. Decipher the code and then prepare for battle against a classmate … The game is based on the popular game of ‘Battleships’ but this game has an Anzac theme. Players give co-ordinates to destroy enemy targets in the area across from ‘No Man’s Land’. Vocabulary used in this game will prompt further research to develop a deeper understanding of the time soldiers spent in Gallipoli (eg, bivvy, jam tin bomb, stores, field gun, trench, etc). This resource contains 3 different levels of the code breaking task and the game templates. It will suit a range of abilities, allowing you to differentiate your student’s learning. A super-fun activity for your students during Easter. Make the secret code wheel and use it to decipher some Easter jokes. Then use the secret code wheel to write your own secret messages. Included: ♦ Secret code wheel template ♦ Teacher notes ♦ 12 Easter jokes to decipher (answers included) ♦ Various Easter themed templates for your students to write secret messages on How it works: Turn the inner wheel so that the ‘code ear’ is pointing to the letter of the alphabet that you see in the mystery code writing. Look at the letter of the alphabet that the ‘answer ear’ is pointing to and write it down. Continue in this way until all of the letters in the mystery code have been deciphered. What you need: All you need is a split pin (otherwise known as a brad pin), or alternatively just use a push-pin and attach it to a pin board or something soft like an eraser.
